You know three things about girls who get taken. They are broken. They come from bad homes. They are not you.

Girls Who Get Taken is a collection in which the seemingly ordinary worlds of women’s lives are subverted, disordered and disrupted by the characters who are contained – or refuse to be – within them.

Although each story in the collection considers a different character, unifying themes run throughout: fear of growing up, inability to fit in with the world, women’s relationships with their bodies, an unwillingness to accept ourselves or our lives as they really are.

A selection of these stories made up my submission to the 2020 Northern Writer’s Awards and I was thrilled to receive a Northern Debut Award from New Writing North. One of the award judges, Amy Liptrot, said of my sample “A really striking collection of short stories … told in a heightened and unusual way. I was really excited by the writer’s voice.”

The collection is complete, currently unpublished and in the hands of my agent, Laura Williams
